Transferring Movie, .zip and .pdf files with 3 tutorials.

The Zune can be used to store and transfer various file formats such as zip files, pdf files and word documents. No Zune hardware or software changes are required at all. This technique will not bypass any DRM on any protected files.

Instructions are included below. The Zune device will appear in "My Computer" and visual access to files is available. Please make these registry modifications at your own risk to your PC.

Tutorial 1: Modify the PC Registry

zune mods

Step 1.

Make sure your Zune is not plugged in and your Zune software isn’t running.

Step 2.

zune mod
Open up regedit by going to the start menu and selecting “run”. Type regedit and hit “OK”

Step 3.

Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Enum\USB\

NOTE: If you have the Nov 13 2007 or newer firmware use ControlSet002
instead of ControlSet001

Step 4.

Right Click on the USB folder and select Find
Search for “PortableDeviceNameSpace”. This should be contained in the Vid_####&Pid_####\########_-_########_-_########_-_########\Device Parameters within the above …\USB\ The ##’s listed here will be numbers and letters specific to your Zune

Step 5.

Change the following values:

  • EnableLegacySupport to 1
  • PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell to 0
  • ShowInShell to 1

Step 6.

  • Plug in your Zune, and make sure the Zune Software starts up.
  • At this point you can open up “My Computer” and browse your device, though it does NOT show up as a drive letter.
Special thanks to Original Source . Great PC Registry Mod!

Tutorial 2: How to add files and folders

Step 1.

Complete steps 1-6 of the PC Registry Mod above.

Step 2.

Connect the Zune to your PC and launch the PC software.

Step 3.

Press the "Start Sync" button in the PC software. This temporarily allows files and folders to be added to the Zune during sync. Drag and drop files into the Zune, avoid placing files on the root of the Zune file structure.

Tutorial 3: Wi-Fi Transfer of Movies, .Zip files, PDF files etc.

Step 1.

Rename the extension of any file to .jpg

Step 2.

Drag and drop the file into "received pictures" using Windows file explorer.

Step 3.

Send the file Zune to Zune as if it were a photo. In this case we had to send an entire folder. We sent 4 good photos and one .pdf file with a .jpg extension. If the single (fake) photo is sent alone an error is detected.

Step 4.

The receiving Zune should sync with the Zune software. The file can then be opened in it's containing folder and renamed to the original extension. No registry mods are required for the receiver.

Wi-Fi tutorial by Zune Scene

This tutorial is hot off the press Nov 24 2006. There are probably ways to smooth things out and make it more user friendly but so far we've posted the 1st thing proven to work. Currently this technique is much more complex than just owning a memory stick and using that to share data with friends. This technique will not bypass any DRM on any protected files.
